Starting on November 5th, VetCPD’s brand new online course ‘Small Animal Nutrition’ is the indispensable CPD course for veterinary professionals that will guide the practice team through the information required to answer owners’ questions about what to feed puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats.

The course will be run by highly respected, and experienced veterinary professional Marge Chandler, DVM, MS, MANZCVS, DACVN, DACVIM, MRCVS. Marge is a consultant in small animal nutrition at Vets Now Referrals, Glasgow and honorary senior lecturer in internal medicine and clinical nutrition at The University of Edinburgh. She has a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Colorado State University (CSU).
Marge explains what prospective students can expect to learn from this course;
“This course will cover the information veterinary professionals need to answer owners’ questions about what to feed their puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats, including questions about homemade diets, raw feeding, vegetarianism, natural diets, and diets free from grains or glutens. Students will learn how to understand and compare pet food labels including the ingredient list and nutrient information. Moving on from healthy pets, the course will also discuss nutritional therapy for chronic kidney disease, lower urinary tract disorders including urolithiasis, dermatological disorders, and an over view of diet in gastrointestinal disorders.”
Seven modules will be covered over the three-week course, including subjects such as, ‘Nutritional assessment of pet and diet including calorie requirements, basic dietary requirements in the EU, understanding pet food labels, sources of reliable nutrition information’, ‘Life stage feeding including maintenance, growth, reproduction, senior pet diets, diets for weight loss and maintenance, dental diets and treats’, ‘Alternative and raw food diets – what is the evidence?’, ‘Dietary management of chronic kidney disease – the most important part of CKD therapy’, and ‘Dietary management of lower urinary tract diseases including feline interstitial cystitis and urolithiasis’.
