The role of SDMA in hyperthyroid cats was the topic that opened the IDEXX “skinny cat” symposium, held as part of ISFM’s 2018 European Congress in Sorrento.
Andrew Bodey of The Hyperthyroid Cat Centre, Wetherby, discussed the challenges of estimating renal function with the longstanding endogenous biomarker creatinine, and highlighted the potential role of SDMA in this patient group.
Hyperthyroid cats are commonly underweight and creatinine is significantly under-represented in this context, over-estimating renal function. SDMA is largely spared this effect.
The Congress extended over five days and was attended by over 500 delegates representing 35 countries.
