High Dose Radiation therapy is a ground breaking treatment for periocular sarcoids is providing new hope to owners of horses with these difficult lesions. During a 10 day stay, horses receive a bespoke treatment of their lesions comprising two radiation fractions administered under standing sedation and performed a week apart. The use of interstitial catheters, specialist imaging techniques and 3D planning systems mean that different parts of the tumour can be given different doses of radiation, providing a treatment that is both safe and effective. The treatment itself takes 5-10 minutes; between treatments the horses are free from radiation and can be treated normally.
