Since its start six years ago the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (www.abtcouncil.org.uk) has grown out of all recognition. Registers of those assessed as competent practitioners are filling up and end users of their skills (Veterinary Practices, Local Authorities and the animal owning public) can easily access their location and contact details through the website at http://abtcouncil.org.uk/index/abtc-members-by-region.html
. The Council is referenced in a Defra guidance manual as the place to find qualified trainers and behaviourists and is a registered charity in England and Wales with plans to extend this to Scotland this year.
The Council’s knowledge base is such that it has been in much demand for feedback on a wide range of government and other consultations. Although the ABTC regulation of the sector is classed as voluntary self-regulation it has the widest support, including the veterinary profession through the BVA, BSAVA, and BVNA and many of the largest animal welfare charities.
