Dr Nigel Campbell, double-boarded Veterinary Specialist, has returned to the UK after 20 years at North Carolina State University, to join the Anaesthesia and Analgesia team at Dick White Referrals in Cambridgeshire. Dr Campbell qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994 and, after a period in general practice, undertook an internship in the UK and a Residency in the USA. He was appointed Clinical Instructor of Anesthesia at North Carolina and joined the Faculty as Clinical Assistant Professor in 2005.
In 2004 he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and in 2009 he went on to gain a second Diploma – from the American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. Asked why he had decided to return to the UK, he said “It was a great opportunity to join one of the largest and most progressive Anaesthesia and Analgesia Teams in Europe. Also, knowing that the facilities, equipment and caseload will grow still further, with the major new expansion currently under construction, I felt that this was the ideal time to make a change and prepare for the next stage in my career”.
DWR currently has five operating theatres but this is set to double when the new building opens in Autumn of 2019. State-of-the art-facilities currently include cardiac output monitoring and a dedicated ultrasound machine for locoregional anaesthesia.
Nigel becomes the sixteenth member of the team which currently comprises five Specialists, two Clinical Fellows, three Residents, three Interns and three Technicians. They support all clinical disciplines at DWR, including Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Soft Tissue Surgery.
DWR is the only non-academic institute in Europe running a Standard Residency Programme in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, which requires that Residents gain supervised experience in large as well as small animals. In addition to over 4,500 dogs and cats anaesthetised annually at DWR, the Anaesthesia and Analgesia Team conduct in the region of 700 equine anaesthetics each year at the nearby Newmarket Equine Hospital.
