Bob Pettit from the Kingsway Veterinary Group in Skipton, North Yorkshire helped save Alan, a 10-year-old Burmese cat suffering a collapsed wind pipe with a quick-thinking referral to Dick White Referrals in Cambridge.
The team at the referral centre, one of the largest in Europe, diagnosed a tracheal stenosis, a narrowing of the wind pipe, and the cat had an innovative life-saving procedure costing in the region of £4000.
Until recently major surgery would have been required but a non-invasive approach was used on this occasion using imaging techniques. A mechanically woven stent, a wire mesh tube made of a “memory metal” alloy was placed and expanded the cat’s windpipe which immediately opened up the pipe.
Bob Pettit, who takes referrals himself for orthopaedic and spinal cases commented “It’s great to be able to provide world class service for customers by working together with other experts through the referrals service.”
